ella is a model, if you know what i mean [08 Feb 2009|08:21am]

A friend of mine recently made a hat for me. She requested that I send her a picture of the hat for her knitting website. Voila, here is a cat in a hat!

This is Ella, who was named for the First Lady of Jazz. She was displeased with the fashion accessory, but I laughed.

(If this isn't okay for the community--mods, please let me know and I'll take it down.)

Oh Ella. [31 Dec 2006|09:14am]

Hi all! I'm Lacey, and I love Ella :) I first learned of her talent in... probably June? I'm not sure exactly. I was given a Jazz compilation, and there were two of her songs on it, the 1960 Berlin performance of "Mack the Knife," and "Summertime" with Louis Armstrong.

I'm trying to acquire more albums as I go... i'll have to have most all of them, by the time it's over.

I don't even know that I can name a favorite song. I have several favorites. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

Mack the Knife (Berlin, 1960)
Got to Get You Into My Life (Ella tries on the Motown sound for size... with a Beatles song. haha)
Drop Me Off in Harlem
I Ain't Got Nothin' but the Blues
Puttin' on the Ritz
'T'ain't Nobody's Business if I Do (A 1986 performance I found on YouTube. 69 years old, and she tears that song UP, and she's wearing this cute little tuxedo too :) )
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Caravan
Take the A Train
A 1980 duet I found on YouTube of her, Sarah Vaughan, and Pearl Bailey
A 1980 duet I found on YouTube between her and Karen Carpenter (sounds crazy, I know!)
A 1960 duet I found on YouTube between her and Dinah Shore

and many many others, lol. If I were stranded on a desert island, i'd want "Mack the Knife," "Got to Get You Into My Life," "'T'Ain't Nobody's Business if I Do," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," and the Dinah Shore duet to wash up on shore with me. But i'd miss her other songs, lol.

I don't know how often ya'll look, but next time you go on YouTube, search for Ella. There's a treasure trove of performance material on there. It's great stuff. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from hearing the master in action, and it's great to see her too :)

Well, this community seems a little dead at the moment, but i'd love to have the opportunity to discuss everyone's favorite Ella songs... there are so many, there's enough for everyone :)

Oh, and I forgot to mention how one of the reasons I love her so much is that as she got older, and her voice started declining, she seemed to almost get better... and she would try so many things! She did a Motown album once, and I think I read somewhere she did an entire album in Portuguese. I read in a biography of hers that one of the times she was in the hospital, she learned Portuguese. I thought that was interesting. Also, I read here: http://ellafitzgerald.com/viewheadline.php?id=4120 that there's gonna' be an Ella Postage stamp coming out in late January. If you go to that link, you can see what the stamp looks like. I know i'll be trying to buy some.

Hey! i'm new to the community- I was told about it by Emraldandsilvr (thanks lex)

I'm trying to do a full list of all the songs Ella recorded, I was wondering if there is an existing one. I've taken the one off her site (334) and I copied all the song lists I could get off the CDs up for auction on Ebay, but it's taking a lot of alphabetizing, and there are many songs that have been put on more than one (or five or ten) CD(s). if you know a site, could you please post it in a comment? it would be fantastic to match against my list, (once i've actually finished it)
Thanks!
Muzzli

haunting songs [05 Jan 2006|09:55pm]

Has anyone ever had a song haunt them? I've had this happen a number of times. The clearest and most persistent example I can think of is from before thanksgiving (US-November 23rdish) when Lush Life seemed to be following me around. In the space of five or six days, I heard at least five versions of that song in various places, including two instrumental versions, sammy davis jr's, and I believe peggy lee. It's happened to me with other songs, but that was the most recent occurence.

Of course nobody's version touches Ella's, but that's to be expected.

Hi everyone. I've just joined.

I'm a 44 year old mom of two, a re-newlywed (in june) and love ella with a passion. I'm always looking for her songs in karaoke bars and invariably disappointed in the selection. My fave to sing is "angel eyes". My fave to listen to is "how high the moon"... the longggg version from the 3 disc set.

Anyway just wanted to say HI. So HI.

Hey guys! Just wanted to introduce myself! I've loved Ella for about a year now and she's one of my favorite singers. Her voice just stuns me and always can put me in a good mood, even with a sad song. She has such purity and clarity in her voice. I'm officially obsessed! lol.

1-How High The Moon
2-Summertime
3-Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered
4-Puttin On The Ritz
5-The Way You Look Tonight
6-The Lady Is A Tramp

Thank you SO MUCH for your help.

Always Singing,

Amanda

Here for suggestions again. The school musical is over and it is time for the variety show. This years variety show is "Bit's of Broadway," so everyone who wants to be in the variety show gets to sing a song from broadway, even if it's originally sund by the opposite sex(yay!). Sadly I'm not one who has seen many a broadway play so I come to you all for suggestions. I've been searching the net for some popular(and good) Broadway songs, but I don't know which ones are right for me, my voice isn't very loud or booming, people tell me that I sound like a mouse, but it does have a good range. I was thinking of singing 'I Got Rhythm' and the version I downloaded conventiantly was sung by Ella! I was also thinking about 'Lady is a Tramp' because that is from Broadway! Suggestions very welcome, they don't have to be sung by Ella if they're good.

ohh...a few minutes ago I heard "Signing Off" by Ella Fitzgerald, and I felt as if I was listening to an angel reading my thoughts out loud to me. Never has a song summed up my emotions as precisely as that song.

Signing off
Does it surprise you
I won't need your lips anymore
Signing off
Can't idolize you
My heart crossed your name off the door

Signing off
Now that I've told you
That this is just where I came in
Signing off
Why should I hold you
You've already said I can't win

It's strange how the rest of the world knows
The things you should see at a glance
And I want what all of the world knows
A person to person romance

Signing off
I can't pretend dear
My trip to the stars took a spill
We're all through
This is the ending
Because you only wanted a thrill
I'm signing off

I'll always remember the pleasure
Of friendship and all that it's worth
I know that it's something to treasure
]From here to the ends of the earth

Signing off
Happy I met you
So please make me happy again
And be sure I won't forget you
The best of everything until then
I'm signing off

Signing Off

Okay so when i grow up i'm gonna bring back cocktail hour.

and me and my friends or neighbors or family will be all dressed up and we will put on ella fitzgerald or frank sinatra and we will chat over cocktails.

yeah, needless to say i have big goals for my life, most of which encompass listening to jazz and few of which involve making any money at all.

i think in the future, we should make it more like the past.

In school I'm auditioning for the musical, Grease and we have to pick our own song to sing at the audition. I wish someone would have filled me in with more information like how long we'd be singing (if we're singing the whole song or they're going to stop us), and if we need accompaniment. Stupid questions but I must know. I have a few songs in mind but I have no idea what he'll be judging us on. I just wish there was a "pre-audition" meeting or something. I keep having a painful flashback of my audition in 8th grade. Never audition when you're sick, it kills you emotionally, trust me. That shrieking voice that came out of my mouth is forever burned into my mind. BLECK. Here are a few songs I had in mind (note most of them are Ella Fitzgerald). These are songs I know by heart:

Ella Fitzgerald - Blue Skies (up until the scatting, let's not complicate things *sigh*)
Ella Fitzgerald - Stairway to the Stars
Bobby Darin - Dream Lover (I like Don Mclean's version, he gave it more of an "oriental twist")
Bobby Darin - Somewhere Beyond the Sea
Frank Sinatra - Fly Me to the Moon
Frank Sinatra - I've Got the World on a String
Ella Fitzgerald - I Won't Dance
Ella Fitzgerald - Heaven
Ella Fitzgerald - Lullaby of Birdland
Sarah Vaughan - Lullaby of Birdland (softer and sweeter version)

Comment Please

The best I can do is sing a song from that era, the 50s. Anyone have any good Ella songs in mind? Easy on the scatting too(as I mentioned above ^-^)
